If you are coming to Amsterdam or Amstelveen for a short-term work stay, registering with the municipality might not be the first thing on your list. Registration is one of the most important administrative steps to settle in, and in some cases it is required by law. This guide explains when and where to register, what documents you need, and how Htel Apartments can help.
Anyone staying in the Netherlands for more than four months must register with the municipality, known as the gemeente. Registration adds you to the Dutch population register, known as the BRP, and gives you a citizen service number, the BSN. The BSN is necessary for receiving a salary, opening a bank account, accessing healthcare, and other official processes.
If your stay is shorter than four months and you do not intend to become a resident, you can register as a non-resident in the RNI, the Register of Non-Residents, and you will still receive a BSN for administrative purposes.
If you will be based in Amsterdam, register at one of the City of Amsterdam registration desks. Appointments are usually required and can be made online through the municipality website.
If you are staying in Amstelveen, you can register at the Amstelveen municipal office or use the expat services that handle registrations for both Amstelveen and nearby Amsterdam neighbourhoods. Many international employees and short-term assignees use the expat desk because it streamlines the process.
Book your appointment as soon as your arrival date is confirmed. During busy relocation seasons appointment slots fill up quickly.
Bring the following to your appointment:
If you are staying in a serviced apartment, a housing confirmation letter from Htel Apartments will usually meet the municipality requirement for proof of address.
At the appointment your details are entered into the BRP or RNI and you will receive a BSN. Keep your BSN safe, because you will need it for payroll, tax filings, health insurance registration, and many other interactions with Dutch institutions.
If you registered as a non-resident in the RNI, you will receive a BSN but you will not be listed as a permanent resident in the municipal records.

We can provide a housing confirmation letter to support your registration, answer common questions about the process, and point you to local registration offices and helpful expat services.
