What Is ‘Gezelligheid’ and Can You Actually Create It?

Gezelligheid (noun) and its adjective gezellig are the Swiss Army knives of the Dutch language. While often loosely translated as "cozy," it actually describes a specific state of mind, an atmosphere, and a sense of belonging all at once.

What Does It Actually Mean?

It is easier to describe what is gezellig than to define the word itself:

  • The Atmosphere: A candlelit "Brown Café" on a rainy Tuesday in Amsterdam.
  • The Social: A dinner with friends where the conversation flows so well you forget to check the time.
  • The Feeling: Coming home after a long bike ride through the Amsterdamse Bos to a warm living room.
  • The Person: Someone who is easy-going, fun to be around, and brings good energy to a group.

The Antonym: Ongezellig

To understand gezelligheid, you must know its opposite. Ongezellig is anything cold, sterile, or socially awkward.

Example: Leaving a party early without saying goodbye to everyone is considered "ongezellig." A brightly lit hospital waiting room is "ongezellig."

5 Ways to Create Gezelligheid in Your New Home

You don't have to be Dutch to master the art of gezelligheid. Here is how you can "make it" (gezellig maken) in 2026:

  1. Lower the Lights: The Dutch despise "the big light" (overhead lighting). Use small lamps and—most importantly—candles. Even at 10:00 AM on a cloudy day, candles are perfectly acceptable.
  2. Bring in the Green: No Dutch home is complete without fresh flowers or a collection of houseplants. It adds "life" to a room.
  3. The "Lekker" Factor: Combine the atmosphere with something lekker (tasty). A coffee and a stroopwafel shared with a neighbor is the ultimate shortcut to a gezellig moment.
  4. Open the Curtains: Paradoxically, gezelligheid is often shared with the world. Many Dutch people keep their curtains open at night to show off their warm, inviting interiors to passersby.
  5. Use Diminutives: To make things feel "smaller" and therefore cozier, the Dutch add "-tje" to words. A biertje (little beer) is much more gezellig than just a bier.

Gezelligheid in Amstelveen

Amstelveen is particularly famous for its "green" gezelligheid. Places like the Stadshart square during the winter markets or the local "brown cafes" near the Oude Dorp are prime locations to witness this cultural phenomenon in action.
