How Do I Get a BSN Number in Amsterdam or Amstelveen for a Short-Term Stay?

If you are planning a short-term stay in Amsterdam or Amstelveen for work — anywhere from one to six months — you will quickly come across the term BSN. This number is essential for everyday life in the Netherlands, from getting paid and paying taxes to accessing healthcare and opening a bank account.

But what exactly is a BSN, and how do you get one if you are not planning to live in the Netherlands permanently? This guide explains everything you need to know about applying for a BSN as a short-term expat.

What Is a BSN and Why Do You Need It?

A BSN (Burgerservicenummer) is a citizen service number issued by the Dutch government to anyone who lives or works in the Netherlands. It is a unique personal identification number used for a wide range of official processes, including:

  • Receiving a salary from a Dutch employer
  • Paying income tax and social security contributions
  • Registering for Dutch health insurance
  • Accessing healthcare services
  • Opening a Dutch bank account

Even if you are only staying for a few months, most employers and government services will require you to have a BSN.

Do You Need a BSN for a Short-Term Stay?

Whether you need a BSN depends on the nature of your stay. If you are working in the Netherlands, receiving a salary from a Dutch company, or registering with the municipality, you will almost always need one — even if your stay is temporary.

There are two main ways to get a BSN, depending on how long you are staying and whether you will be considered a resident or a non-resident.

Option 1: Register as a Resident (Stay Longer Than 4 Months)

If you plan to stay in Amsterdam or Amstelveen for more than 4 months, you are required by law to register your address with the local municipality. Once you register, you will automatically receive a BSN.

What you need:

  • A valid passport or EU ID card
  • A rental agreement or housing confirmation
  • Proof of employment or income (optional but helpful)

After submitting your documents and registering your address, your BSN will be sent to you by post, usually within a few days.

Option 2: Register as a Non-Resident (Stay Under 4 Months)

If your stay is less than 4 months, you can still get a BSN by registering as a non-resident in the RNI (Register of Non-Residents). This is the best option if you need a BSN for work but are not planning to officially move to the Netherlands.

How to apply:

  1. Make an appointment at one of the 19 RNI offices in the Netherlands.
    • Amsterdam has an RNI desk, and Amstelveen residents can also use nearby locations.
  2. Bring your valid passport or EU ID card.
  3. Provide your home address abroad and your temporary address in the Netherlands (if available).

You will receive your BSN immediately during the appointment.

Where to Apply in Amsterdam and Amstelveen

For most expats, the easiest place to apply is the Amsterdam City Hall (Gemeente Amsterdam). You can book an appointment online before you arrive.

If you are staying in Amstelveen, you can also visit the Amstelveen Municipality Office or another nearby RNI location. It’s best to book an appointment as soon as you know your travel dates, as slots can fill up quickly.

Tips for a Smooth Registration

  • Book early: Appointments can be limited, especially during busy relocation seasons.
  • Bring the right documents: Double-check the municipality website before your visit.
  • Check your employer’s requirements: Some companies require a BSN before your first paycheck.
  • Secure accommodation first: Many municipalities require a housing confirmation or rental contract to complete your registration.
