What to do in Amsterdam on a 7-day city trip?

A seven-day holiday gives you the opportunity to really experience the beauty of Amsterdam. The city has so much to offer in terms of art, shopping, culture, history and entertainment. It would be such a pity to only plan a hurry-up weekend city trip. Now Htel has a unique offer for you! When you decide to stay a week, you will get 2 nights for just 1 euro! The Htel apartments are centrally located and easily reached from Amsterdam Schiphol airport. Staying in an apartment saves you costs on both the accommodation and meals. So why only spend a weekend in Amsterdam when you can also stay a week?

To give you a taste of your stay we have made a seven-day schedule for you.

Day 1: Get the feel of the city and the canals

For an introduction to Amsterdam you will first go to the city centre. Give yourself the time to discover the centre to get a feel of the city’s atmosphere. Start with a canal cruise, the boat will show you the most historical sites of Amsterdam. When you like shopping the ‘9 streets’ is the district you shouldn’t miss. Designer boutiques, art galleries and vintage clothing stores are there to explore for unique finds. It is also the place where the locals have drinks and bites on the terraces, right along the most beautiful canals of Amsterdam.

Day 2: Museums to choose from

Amsterdam has many museums to choose from. The most important museums can be found at Museum Square. Choose between the Rijksmuseum with Rembrandt’s Night Watch, the Van Gogh museum with the Sunflowers or the Stedelijk Museum of Modern Art with their Karel Appel collection. You will understand why the names of our apartments honour these great Dutch painters. To see all these famous Dutch paintings, make sure you take the whole day for this visit.

Day 3: Say Cheese!

Visit the Jordaan area. In this area, you can get away from the mass of tourists and find some true Amsterdam city life. As it is a residential area in the city centre it has a lot of shops, cafes and restaurants. After that you can visit a cheese exhibition and taste the unique taste of several Dutch cheeses. In the afternoon, you can explore the Amsterdam Forest near the apartments of Htel. This park is three times the size of Central Park, New York. It is perfect for a picnic, leisure or several sports activities.

Day 4: History is there to experience

In the morning, you can visit the famous Anne Frank house and museum. Most people visit the Anne Frank house, where she wrote her diary. The place where she had to hide with her family can be seen. Next you could visit the Jewish Historical Museum which gives more context to the history of Jewish life in Amsterdam.

In the afternoon, you can go back to the city centre and visit the Royal Palace at Dam Square and do some time shopping in the famous Kalverstraat. After that you can get away from the busy shopping streets at the Begijnhof, a historical oasis in the middle of the city. Finally, you can visit the flower market at one of the canals. To see, smell and buy the Dutch world famous flowers.

Day 5: Hidden treasures and secrets

A real treasure is to visit the museum ‘Our dear Lord in the attic’. A hidden treasure of a church hidden away from sight. It has been kept in beautiful original state. You are then also close to the famous Red Light district. It is a place you should walk through just for a moment. During the day, it is quiet and almost looks like a regular neighbourhood just like others in Amsterdam. But at night the streets are full of tourist going in and out of the coffee shops and walking around to see the ladies that are behind the windows. In the afternoon, you can visit Museum Van Loon. It is a double-sized canal house that was owned by the wealthy Van Loon family who set up a beautiful art collection. Now it is a museum with period furniture, art, and family portraits. There also is a beautiful garden. A true hidden treasure not to be missed.

Day 6: Dutch beer and bicycles

Today you can act like a true Dutchy. There are multiple points where you can easily rent a bike or you can get them at your apartment. You can cycle to the Vondelpark in the city centre. This park has such a relaxing atmosphere. It is like the city’s garden where the locals find space to enjoy the nice summer days. If you like cycling, a unique way to see Amsterdam is by taking a pedal boat through the canals. But you can also explore the canals on your regular bike. In the afternoon, you can go to the Heineken Experience breweries and see and taste the history of one of most world-famous beers. The Heineken Experience is one of the most visited sites in Amsterdam. Get a taste of why this is the case.

Day 7: Windmills and wooden shoes

On this day, you can go to the Zaanse Schans. This used to be one of the most important windmill driven industrial areas in the Amsterdam metropolitan area. Also, shipbuilding was prominent here. Even the Russian Tsar Peter the Great came here to learn how to build ships. His tiny house can be visited. But the most impressive is the still operating windmills and the old wooden houses. Here you can also see how the famous Dutch wooden shoes are made and see if they fit you.

Of course, this is only a taste of your 7-day vacation in Amsterdam. The staff at Htel can recommend other programs or possibilities. They can tell you all about the actual events. This ranges from concerts to dance events and various experiences.
