Kop van Jut - Pick of the Month
maandag, 16 augustus 2010
For expats and people here for a short stay Amsterdam one of the biggest challenges is always where to find to the right things to do, those things that are nice, trendy or fun. Therefore I’m introducing my ‘pick of the month’: Kop van Jut.
I believe I still get to know you better every day, you as clients and relations of Htel Serviced Apartments Amsterdam and Amstelveen. I also plan on continuously improving the relationship I have with you. Partially, this relationship is obviously one of my key responsibilities. I want to be here to help you, expats and other Htel guests, to enjoy your stay.
One of my main tasks is to allow you to integrate easily in Amsterdam and to be able to enjoy the details that make this city so incredibly special. Now, in stead of creating enormous lists of things to do, I shall share my personal experience and ideas with you every so often.
The last thing I want to do is to overload you with too many ideas that are not feasible to experience to start with due to sheer time constraints. In stead, my pick of the month is just 1 highlight, a restaurant, event or a place to go. I’ll share my pick with you, and give you recommendations. This time I will pick a restaurant, Kop van Jut.
Let’s start explaining what this cozy place’s name is all about. Kop van Jut is a game, played in public.
The game is all about hitting a button with a sledge hammer hard enough to push up a weight at the other end via a lever. That weight is supposed to reach a certain height, and hit a bell that’s high up in the air. Not an easy game as a sledge hammer quickly weighs about 3 kilograms. Additionally the button that you need to hit looks big, but aiming with force at this button is often underestimated, and many simply fail to even get close to the button when sending down the sledge hammer with a crashing force.
This game is mostly found at funfairs, and it’s good fun for everyone, guaranteed.
This is where the restaurant comes in. The restaurant is not very big, and you’ll experience the cozy atmosphere the moment you walk in. Kop van Jut carries the name of an ‘eetcafe’, not a restaurant. Literally translated it would a be an eatcafe, an eatery. A little less fancy then a restaurant, however suitable for more fun, chit chat and relaxation.
For me, good service is one of the key things required to allow me to enjoy food or drinks. Let me tell you, the service at Kop van Jut is great.
In terms of food, try the sate (chicken satay) and the fries. Other than that I also like the steak. Drinks: fancy a beer? Try kop van jut blond bier. The wine menu is limited, but offers good choices with the food menu.
Kop van Jut is located on the Leidsekruisstraat 24, next to the Leidseplein, and therefore an excellent option for people who want to do a bit of
sight seeing in the heart of the city center. On the Leidseplein you’ll also find plenty of terraces, bars and night life.
A last thing, the place is tiny as I mentioned, and sometimes runs out of seating space. We’ll happily make a reservation for you.
Enjoy your Amsterdam stay,
Ingmar
