SAIL Amsterdam 2010 - Program and Highlights

SAIL Amsterdam 2010 is around the corner. It’s happening again from August 19th 2010 till August 23rd 2010. This world famous event takes place once every 5 years and is a tremendous and unique exposition of ships. A perfect event to visit Amsterdam during your short stay in Amsterdam.
Top 10 events during SAIL Amsterdam 2010:
- Go and see the sail in parade
An unbelievable spectacle, all ships enter into the harbor area of Amsterdam. You’ll see impressive tall ships, incredible replicas, marine ships and some modern ships, all accompanied by hundreds other boats. This spectacle takes place on the 19th of August 2010 between 12:00 and 15:00 in Amsterdam.
- Visit the tall ships
Tall ships sail in from the entire world to be seen and visited here. Visits the Tall ships area on the 19th of August 2010 between 10.00 and 16.00 hrs. Get to know the stories behind all the ships. It’s worth it to walk by all the different tall ships. On each ship different things are organized. Story tellers that take you into history, the storms and the silences of certain ships. Marine orchestras play to show what their reputation is all about. See the various festivals organized and held on different ships.
- Salute protocollair
At six haven, starting on the 19th of August 2010 at 13:00 hrs, prepare for the thundering noise of the cannons when all participating ships are received according official protocol. Cover your ears and attend this century-old tradition. Witness how the ships salute you with their flags and how each crew sings their national anthem.
- Firework show
On the 20th of August at 22:15 hrs. nobody will be watching the ships on the water. Everyone shall be watching the skies instead. A breathtaking firework show, a must see!
- Pirates for kids
On the ING-pirate island you’ll find the stranded ship of captain Johannes Jordaan. Experience the adventures of Numa and Captain Jojo. Animation every day and all day during SAIL Amsterdam. But beware of the pirate Blackgoast. Who will win the battle for the Gotheborg ship?
- Province Noord Holland kids’ stage
A varied program for kids from 6 to 12 years old with lots of music and theater performances. Enjoy the canal-festival, listen to the story ‘my father is a captain’, singing songs and meet captain Winokio.
- Sailsation
The Marine and the KNRM will demonstrate spectacular rescue operations and anti-piracy actions on the water with helicopters and rescue boats. Additionally you will see typical Dutch boats (Skûtjes) race each other in different formats.
- Pieremachocheltocht
In one of my previous blog posts I already told you that I believe the Dutch are quite creative. And I think you already know that the Dutch have this thing with water. Plenty of Dutch people live meters below sea-level, stories about the Dutch sea fleet go back centuries and SAIL Amsterdam gives a good impression of it all. Now ,do you want to know really how creative and crazy the Dutch get? If it floats you’ll find it on the Amsterdam canals on the 20th of August 2010 from 13:00 hrs to 16:00 hours.
- Rowers’ salute
Over 900 rowers will bring their salute to the tall ships. A guarantee for fantastic picture moments with unbelievable sights, just imagine all these boats around all the impressive tall ships. See the salute on the 22nd of August from 09:00 hrs. till 10:30 hrs.
- Aquacorso
14 Decorated historical ships, covered entirely with flowers. The Dutch show their love for flowers – a love that goes back for centuries- via unique flower decorations. Visit aquacorso on the 22nd of August, 11:00 hours till 17:00 hours
