2011 is going to be a good year. A great year. Lots of things happening, loads of events going on in the city. Ideal stuff to combine with a short stay in Amsterdam.
I made you a personal selection of upcoming events and festivals that I believe might be of interest for you. During next year I wll highlight a couple of them shortly before they'll take place, but here goes our 2011 Amsterdam event calendar of the best events you can expect in the area next year.
26 – 30 January
Amsterdam International fashion week.
Fashion event with both young and established designers. The best part: the show is also open to general public- and I believe that it's the only one in it's kind. Check the downtown section on the website for details. more info
2-3 April
Museum weekend.
Lots of museums open their doors to the public for free, or against big discounts. Get yourself a culture injection.
14-24 April
IMAGINE 27th Amsterdam Fantastic Film Festival
Loads of European and Asian movies will be shown on this festival. Professionals and lovers of this genre gather here.
30th April
Queens-day
National day in Holland festivities and free concerts to honour the former Dutch Queen. Never again will you see a party this mad and this orange. Consider partying the night before, if you really want to live this party to the fullest.
27-28 May
Amsterdam Comedy Festival
Two day event with the best stand-up comedy of Holland and Belgium. Laugh till your stomach hurts.
5 June – 28 August
Vondelpark Open Air Theater
Different free concerts in the Vondelpark with theatre, dance, cabaret, jazz, stand-up comedy and music. A varied music program spread out over the summer weeks.
17-19 June
Open Garden Days
Thirty canal gardens in Amsterdam will be open to the public for a visit. The Dutch are known for their flowers, these canal gardens will surprise you with their beauty.
13-17 July
Amsterdam International Fashion Week
Fashion event with both young and established designers. Also open to public- this is part II
14-17 August
Gay Pride
A lot of parties and parades with the main act the parade through the canals of Amsterdam. In all honesty, this is a personal favorite of mine, and open to all public. The canal parade is the highlight of the Pride. more info
14 – 22 August
Canal Festival
Music festival with classic music concerts on different locations in Amsterdam. A stong focus on young talent- a must see for fans of classical music.
26 – 28 August
Uitmarkt
Free festival where loads of artists will present themselves to the public. Variations from ballet to hip-hop to jazz and theatre. This is the opening of the cultural season in Holland.
2-12 September
Fringe festival
A selection of remarkable shows from the season will be presented on this theatre festival. Unstrained performancesfollowing the example of Fringe in New York, Prague and Edinburgh.
8 October
Amsterdam Canal Race
A boat race of 24 kilometre through the canals of Amsterdam. Good sports fun when these big boats with their rowing teams struggle to race through the tiny canals. more info
16 October
Amsterdam Marathon
This is the biggest marathon event in the Netherlands. Over 30.000 sportsmen in top condition in this all exhausting run.
19-22 October
Amsterdam Dance Event
With over 700 artists from all over the globe performing in 44 clubs, ADE’s festival is the world’s biggest festival for electronic music. Let's partyyyyyy!!!!
5 November
Museum Night
A lot of museums will be opened by night and can be entered for free. Not only an unusual hour, but also unusual tours, theme events and performences.
